Living in Southern Wisconsin, the different seasons bring with it
the vision of wonderful foods that we may rarely indulge in the other
months of the year. Of course, there are the usual summer delights
of corn on the cob, watermelon and icecream cones. And who doesn’t
anticipate the mouth-watering, traditional fare on our heavy laden
Thanksgiving table. We love to look forward to these special times,
as well as the special aray of foods that we know they will bring. These
are very wonderful times with great foods.
With that said, however, that’s not really what we call our “comfort food”.
Comfort foods can be craved for and eaten in any season and for a miriad of
reasons. It is usually a food that says whatever it is you need at that time.
Sometimes we aren’t even sure of the reason we need this certain food and
it can say things that truly need. It’s the warm fuzzies and I love you, it can
be a way to bring things we need closer and those we don’t we can go to another
time and place if only for a short time.
I am always excited when one of my sisters come to visit me. My sister
from Ky. comes most often, as it is on the way to their cottage on the Milwaukee
River. They made their usual trip, and stopped to spend the night a few
weeks ago. We ate late, so we just grabbed a pizza, and the next night we
ate out.
On their way back to Ky. they stopped to see us again. I always try to
feed them well and thought it would be great to have steaks on the grill.
My sister and I went to the store and when she asked what I was going to
make…. hummmm… she wasn’t at all excited, not even a little. So, I asked her
what she would like to have for supper. She didn’t hesitate….CORN CHOWDER.
Number one on our sisters comfort food list is: Corn Chowder. Made
for us, all of our growing up years, and it still makes us happy. We have
more, but I would love to hear what some of your ”special” comfort foods are,
and feel free to share the recipe with us.
